Staff and a pupil at Rydal Penrhos are working on a special project to assist a local hospital during a time of crisis.

Sixth Form pupil Jamie Lavery, together with Design Technology teacher Mark Harmsworth and technician James Bonser, are working on providing protective headwear for hospital staff to use during the current coronavirus pandemic.

They were asked by a parent who works for the NHS if they could help in any way, and the trio are using the school’s state-of-the-art 3D Printers situated in the Design Technology department.

The manufacturing will result in PLA headbands with an acetate face shield, which will be supplied to Ysbyty Gwynedd to in their fight against Covid-19 in the coming weeks.

Each mask costs around £2.50 to produce and the current team are making ten per day at the present time.

Rydal Penrhos will be covering the majority of the cost but are asking members of the school and the wider community to make a donation so that they can increase production at a very difficult time for the National Health.

The school is also looking for a second 3D Printer so that they can increase production.

Senior School head Sally Ann Harding, said: “This is another wonderful gesture from our staff and pupils, who have really come together to assist areas of the community wherever they can.

“Providing our incredible NHS staff with more equipment is going to help them enormously, and hopefully the Rydal Penrhos and wider community will get behind their amazing efforts so far.”
