Forging a successful career from a Rydal Penrhos education
October 15, 2020

A Rydal Penrhos education is much more than just outstanding exam results, a rich academic curriculum and fantastic extra-curricular opportunities.

It is also about preparing each pupil for the next stage of their journey. This is done with an exceptional preparation programme for university or the working world, which ensures that every young person who leaves Rydal Penrhos is ready for the upcoming challenges thanks to the expert guidance and support they receive from the school’s dedicated teaching staff.

One man who has played a leading role in this process over the years is Mike Farnell, Head of Careers at Rydal Penrhos who recently celebrated his 34th year working at the school.

This led to the popular figure looking at his professional networking site LinkedIn, where he keeps in touch with former pupils to see just how well their respective careers are progressing.

He said: “Via LinkedIn, I maintain contact with hundreds of ORPs (old Rydal Penrhosians) and it is personally rewarding to see how former pupils progress after leaving school. So many contacted me to offer congratulations on my recent work anniversary, that I took a little time to delve deeper as to what they all did after leaving school.

“I was humbled by the wide variety and success found by so many and I took immense satisfaction knowing so many appear to be successful.”

Mr Farnell discovered that former pupils are in some highly important roles across te globe:

  • Senior portfolio analyst at Bloomberg
  • Beginning a Masters in Management Science
  • Business Manager
  • Supply Chain Co-ordinator
  • Chief Operating Officer for the Mary Rose
  • Lead E-commerce officer
  • Events Manager
  • Policy Officer for the UN World Food programme
  • Operations Executive for Prince’s Trust
  • Senior Associate at PWC
  • Company Directors and a smattering of CEOs and CFOs alongside a host of business owners

This is further proof of how Rydal Penrhos provides a strong foundation from which to build a profitable and successful career. The school has a rich tradition of pupils who go onto great things upon leaving and this is something our teaching staff take a significant amount of pride in.

“I had a sense of vicarious pride and satisfaction and wish all former pupils who may read this every success,” added Mr Farnell.

“I also hope that it may inspire the current crop of pupils about to apply for work or university that they can achieve success with the same level of perseverance so ably demonstrated by former pupils.  I wish you all continued success.”
