With less than two weeks to go, anticipation is growing ahead of the upcoming whole school Sports Day on Friday 26 May 2023 at Rydal Penrhos.
Our school calendar is always very busy and this certainly the case during Trinity Term. As we approach the end of the academic year, we can look forward to many highlight events from out school’s tradition; none less important than Sports Day. This exciting event perfectly marries the qualities of sporting participation, house competition, and community engagement that are all extremely important at Rydal Penrhos.
Our school has a rich sporting tradition that dates back to the era when Wilfred Wooler and Bleddyn Williams were making their names on the international sporting stage. Sporting legends of this ilk have set an exceptional example for our current pupils, who feel an immense sense of pride in not only their sporting pursuits, but also their house identities. There are four Senior houses at Rydal Penrhos – Osborn, Payne, Wesley, and Morgan – alongside three Prep houses – Brecon, Snowdon and Pembroke – and each inspires real dedication and loyalty.
On Friday 26 May, Rydal Penrhos pupils, parents, and staff can look forward to a wide range of different sporting events as part of our annual showcase event; from the intensity of the 100m sprint to the concentration of the classic egg-and-spoon-race, and of course the famous Rydal Mile, which so many current and former pupils have tackled in the past. The day promises to be filled with excitement, energy, and a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
Last year’s Sports Day was a great success, with glorious sunshine and a huge number of our parents and families taking time out of their busy schedules to lend support to the festivities. The Prep competition was won by Brecon, while Osborn emerged victorious in the Senior event. Jonathan Osbourne enhanced his growing reputation as a top young athlete with victory in the 100 metres for Morgan, after crossing the line in just 11.17 seconds. We look forward to what kind of time the talented pupil can produce this year!
The arrangements for this year’s event are as follows: from 09:00 to 12:00, the Prep track and field events will take place on New Field and Blackburn’s Piece. This will be followed by Pre-School races on New Field from 11:00 to 11:30. Between 12:00 to 13:00, there will be a pause in the sporting action as a whole school pupil and parent picnic takes place on New Field. Finally, from 13:00 to 16:00, the Senior track and field events will take place on New Field and Blackburn’s Piece.
We would be delighted to see parents and family members join pupils and staff as we enjoy the day’s events. Sports Day is an excellent opportunity to support your child, engage with the school community, and enjoy a fun-filled day out in the sunshine. We hope to see you there!
