Incredible UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge results
March 9, 2022

Rydal Penrhos pupils are celebrating some exceptional results from their UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge efforts this year.

Not only do Rydal Penrhos pupils develop their academic prowess through a rich and varied curriculum from Pre-School to Sixth Form, but the school actively encourages participation in various competitions and challenges throughout the year. This is something that has come with great success and also gives those taking part a real sense of achievement that can boost confidence upon returning to a classroom environment.

One of the most anticipated is the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust challenges that take place annually. These are held at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels depending on the age group and they are open to pupils across the globe.

Rydal Penrhos is delighted to announce a phenomenal set of results from this year’s UKMT Intermediate Challenge, with no fewer than 22 pupils gaining Bronze, Silver or Gold certificates as a result of their tremendous efforts.

Lily Davies and Zac Roberts were the pupils that attained a prestigious Gold and they will now test their skills in the Pink Kangaroo stage of the challenge alongside other bright mathematicians on Thursday 17 March.

There was further cause for celebration regarding Zac, who received “Best in School” and scored a whopping 108, which represents a substantial achievement considering the Gold cut-off point is 81.

Connor Bullick, Keira Luke, Finlay Perry and Fflur Pierce will be participating in the Grey Kangaroo section on the same date based on their superb scores during the challenge, with a host of pupils also emerging from the challenge with a significant amount of credit.

It’s been a memorable few days for the Mathematics department at Rydal Penrhos, with these achievements coming soon after iGCSE examination results were announced.

A total of 100 per cent of Year 11 candidates secured 9-7 grades, which is the equivalent of A*-A. 64 per cent of these attained 9 grades, with 91 per cent securing 9-8 (A*).

The Intermediate Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice assessment. It encourages mathematical reasoning, the precision of thought, and fluency in using basic maths techniques to solve interesting problems.

We would like to congratulate our amazing young mathematicians on their remarkable success. Everyone at Rydal Penrhos remains enormously proud of you all!
