Forest School Club’s ‘Snug as a Bug’ project a big hit
October 8, 2021

Rydal Penrhos pupils took part in a fun activity surrounding a “Bug Hotel” during their latest Forest School Club session.

Rydal Penrhos has the most incredible woodland area available on site and so it is a natural progression for us to have developed comprehensive Forest School provision as part of the well-rounded education offered at the school.

This exciting natural environment focuses on providing a safe outdoor learning experience, one in which children are encouraged to explore, discover, investigate and take suitable risks.

What could be a better way for children to learn than being outside and discovering things for themselves?

A chosen theme could be based on a personal attribute, such as co-operation or creativity; helping to encourage personal development; or it may be based on a curriculum topic –mathematics, history, art or science.

It could even be more overtly about the forest – wildlife, habitats, trees, sticks, or weather-related.

Whatever the theme, our Forest School offers all the children wonderful opportunities for learning at many levels.

Rydal Penrhos’ Forest School Club is always one of the more popular extra-curricular activities within Key Stage 2. This not only builds core skills outside of a typical classroom environment but also allows pupils to boost friendships, improve communication and have a lot of fun in the process.

Another fine example of this was during a recent activity that centred on putting together a new “Bug Hotel” for the Forest School area using materials situated around the stunning site and recyclable items to provide further comfort.

Under the qualified tutelage of Mrs Pyves and Mr Granger, the pupils worked together exceptionally well in pursuit of ensuring small creatures were ’snug as a bug’ for the upcoming winter.

Their hard work paid off with an outstanding final construction. Well done to all!
