Smoothing the Year 6 to Year 7 transition
January 16, 2023

Rydal Penrhos endeavours to smooth the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, with another special event arranged later this term.

Transitioning from primary to secondary school is something that requires careful consideration. This always comes with unique challenges and staff at Rydal Penrhos strive to work even closer together to support children and families, ensuring pupils are prepared for this big life change both academically and emotionally.

After moving from primary school to secondary school, pupils will encounter familiar subjects in new ways and in more depth. They’ll be expected to become more responsible for their own learning and take on greater independence such as finding their own way to different classes, scheduling homework and remembering books and other items for lessons and extra-curricular activities.

These new experiences will stretch and challenge their organisation, planning and communication skills. However, moving from Year 6 to Year 7 is an exciting opportunity to develop social and academic confidence, too.

The differences can feel overwhelming. The many unknowns, the influx of new faces, new teachers, academic pressures, trying to fit in and make new friends are stressful situations for even the most outgoing young pupils.

This is something that Rydal Penrhos recognises and looks to alleviate throughout the academic year. Staff have already put on a comprehensive transition programme for Year 6 in recent months, with trips to departments such as Design Technology proving popular with those about to embark on an important stage of their education.

Rydal Penrhos will also hold a Year 6 into Year 7 Day on Thursday 9 February, which will be split into two parts.

The morning session will consist of current Year 6 pupils and prospective children participating in many exciting activities throughout the senior site. This will be followed by a parent information evening from 6-7pm led by Ms Sarah Bollan (Year 7-10 Pastoral Lead) and Mr Phil Sutton (Deputy Principal) that pupils can also attend.

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to this latest transition event. Our thanks also to go the staff for their ongoing commitment to giving pupils’ piece of mind ahead of the next stage of their journey through education.
