Year 13 pupils at Rydal Penrhos have been reflecting on their time at the school after receiving some truly outstanding A-Level results.
The hard-working group managed to secure 41.1 per cent A*-A grades, which is the second-highest in Rydal Penrhos’ history since the introduction of the A* grade.
This is an increase of 20.4% on the previous year, and those achieving A*-B marks also went up by a considerable margin to 63.9%, which represents a 22.4% rise.
The overall percentage of Sixth Form pupils who gained A*-C grades was 80.4, which 20% better than the 2018/19 academic year.
The school also recorded a 96.8 per cent pass rate – up 5.6% – to round off a phenomenal year of academic excellence from the Year 13 group.
Executive Principal John Waszek fully expects that once the appeals and re-evaluation process has been completed, these will become the school’s best-ever results.

“I am overjoyed with my results and my family are so happy. The support and opportunities I gained at Rydal Penrhos have given me the right sort of character and skills ahead of university.
“It was great to know that there was a teaching staff willing to fight your corner and provide all the communication you need. That has been the best thing that I gained from my time at the school.”

“Being around people who want to see you grow as a person has been the main thing I can take away from my time at the school. This is something I probably would not have received anywhere else, and I consider myself very fortunate.”

Keira Bonnington

Keira ended a long association with Rydal Penrhos with some impressive results that enabled her to attain her place at the University of Bristol to study Geology. And becoming inspired thanks to small class sizes that focus on the individual is something that clearly benefitted the pupil.
“I am very pleased to get these results and to get into my top university of choice. The small class sizes are something that really benefitted me at Rydal Penrhos, and I don’t think I would have found what inspired me otherwise. This was especially evident in Geography, which I am now going to pursue as a possible career path.”

Bijou Rajagopal

Another exceptional success story came from Bijou, who attained two A*s, one A and an A* (EPQ) to book her place at the London School of Economics (LSE) to study Actuarial Science. And the pupil feels more than ready for the next stage of her journey thanks to the knowledge acquired from the various university preparation initiatives at Rydal Penrhos.
“When I got my results, I was ecstatic. The different experiences I gained at Rydal Penrhos were incredible and they will help me an enormous amount at university. I was heavily involved in the Music department, and I also got a significant amount out of the Amnesty group and Peer Mentoring initiatives.
“I feel ready for the next step. Things such as the Classroom to Campus course put on by teaching staff during the lockdown was a real benefit for me personally.”

Another pupil that secured his first choice was Matt, who secured three A grades in Mathematics, Further Maths and Physics. This resulted in a confirmed place studying Mathematics at the University of Nottingham.
Matt has been at Rydal Penrhos since Reception and was highly complimentary of the guidance received during the coronavirus school lockdown and wider experiences during his time at the school.
“My results were what I was hoping for, so I am delighted. It was a challenging time, but the staff were so supportive, and they did everything possible to ensure I reached my potential.
“I think the main thing I will take from my time at Rydal Penrhos is an improvement in conversational skills both in a relaxed setting and more formally in public. You are treated like an adult, and that really helps. Every staff member cares deeply about their pupils, and this is something evident across my time from Prep School to Sixth Form.”

Will Stewart

Will’s eye-catching results saw the pupil achieve on A* and two A’s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Economics.
This saw him become another to achieve their top university choice. Will is now moving on to the University of Lancaster to study Economics and Mathematics.
“I am very happy. My results were better than I had expected. I think the way that teaching staff handled the assessment process and all the uncertainty was impressive.”

Ed Patrick
Ed Patrick
Ed managed to gain A*, A and B grades in English Literature, Physics and Mathematics. The pupil has been at Rydal Penrhos throughout his senior school education, and it is evident that he has made the most out of every available opportunity over the years.
“Everyone has been really supportive. I think the main thing my education at Rydal Penrhos has taught me is you need as many experiences as possible. Whether that be sport, music, art or science, getting a balance and learning new skills are always going to reflect well on you as a person. And the academic and extra-curricular options have something to cater for every interest.”
