Year 2 pupils at Rydal Penrhos put their knowledge acquired during STEM lessons to good use during a special beach clean-up this week.
We are incredibly proud of how environmentally conscious Rydal Penrhos pupils are. This is evident across all year groups and is a testament to their caring nature and the knowledge passed onto them by the school’s outstanding teaching staff during various topical discussions and subjects.
Climate change and the obvious dangers to the environment is a topic more prevalent than ever in today’s society. World leaders are aiming to lower the earth’s carbon footprint as temperatures rise, glaciers melt and freak weather incidents are increasing across the globe.
Year 2 pupils at Rydal Penrhos are part of the next generation of eco-warriors and were keen to do whatever they could to improve the picturesque area around them.
They have been learning about animal classification during recent Science lessons and particularly sea creatures in STEM, which teacher Catherine Culver linked to a thought-proking discussion about plastics in the ocean.
The pupils designed their own litter catching ocean machines last week and got active on Tuesday 5 October by walking all the way to Porth Eirias on Colwyn Bay’s beautiful seafront for a beach clean under the supervision of staff.
They really enjoyed being litter detectives but were pleased not to find too much on the beautiful blue flag beach, something that aided the community around them and also boosted their awareness of the topic outside of the classroom.
Mrs Culver and the pupils will now begin following up their work on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan, so they can really think about what happens to their rubbish.
Great work, Year 2. We hope you take a lot from the beach clean and continue to do your bit to help the environment.
