Year 3 pupils at Rydal Penrhos have been drawing inspiration from one of the greatest Welsh painters of all time for a recent project.
Learning through art enriches the experience of studying while at school as well as preparing pupils for life after they depart. It encourages self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity, which is an important part of the curriculum from a very early age at Rydal Penrhos.
Our Reception-Year 6 pupils benefit enormously from the passionate and exceptional teaching of Suzy Morris. They also have the most beautiful Art room to learn and get creative with every tool imaginable in pursuit of achieving their goals.
Mrs Morris does an incredible job of incorporating some legendary artists – both modern and historical – for pupils to explore, discuss and draw inspiration from to improve their own artistic skills in a supportive setting.
Another fine example of this emerged from a recent Year 3 project, with the enthusiastic group creating their very own self-portraits in a style implemented by an industry leader, learning about texture in their work and using palette knives to paint.
Their work was based on that of Shani Rhys James MBE, a Welsh painter based in Llangadfan, Powys. She has been described as “arguably one of the most exciting and successful painters of her generation” and “one of Wales’ most significant living artists”.
In addition to dozens of critically acclaimed exhibitions featuring her work, Mrs James was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in 1994. In the 2006 New Year’s Honours, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for “services to art”.
Each pupil worked exceptionally hard on their respective pieces. Their creations will now be added to the colourful displays situated both in the Art department and throughout the Prep site at Rydal Penrhos.
Year 3 are all bringing on their artistic skills throughout the academic year, building key skills and also improving confidence and expression along the way.
Here are some examples of their fabulous work. Well done to all!
