Rydal Penrhos Year 6 pupils recently bid a fond farewell to their time in the Prep by embarking on a thrilling adventure up Yr Wyddfa.
Completing their time at the Prep is a significant and proud milestone for every Rydal Penrhos pupil. It is a period marked by cherished traditions and special occasions, with one of the most notable being the Prep Speech Day. During this event, Year 6 pupils showcased their leadership of the Prep with a series of brilliant speeches from the likes of the Head Boy and Head Girl, their Deputies, and the Heads of Houses.
Another leaving tradition for Year 6 pupils, which has gained popularity in recent years, is the end-of-year hike up Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon. At Rydal Penrhos, our Welsh identity holds paramount importance. Pupils actively learn the Welsh language in dedicated lessons and are immersed in it throughout school life; not least when they sing traditional Welsh songs and hymns such as ‘Calon Lan’ and ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’.
Considering this, climbing Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Wales, serves as a fitting culmination of our pupils’ time in the Prep. Scaling this magnificent mountain not only presents a physical challenge but also symbolizes the resilience and determination instilled in each young learner at Rydal Penrhos.
On Wednesday 5 July 2023, Year 6 pupils donned their windproof jackets and walking boots, ready to ascend the mountain. Despite some dark clouds hovering overhead, Mrs Pyves’ class remained undeterred and embarked on their climb. Taking regular breaks to replenish themselves with drinks and snacks, the closely-knit class successfully reached the summit in good time and were delighted by their accomplishment.
This amazing day out in Snowdonia would not have been possible without the dedication and guidance of the teachers and staff accompanying our pupils. By successfully navigating the task of summiting Wales’ tallest mountain, Year 6 demonstrated that they have acquired the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to embark on the next chapter of their educational journey.
We wish Year 6 the best as they begin life on the Senior site in September!
