When it comes to reading standards, nothing is left to chance at Rydal Penrhos School.
As a school, we recognise that reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in a pupil’s academic success and personal development.
Time and again, it has been demonstrated that if a pupil’s reading age is not sixteen or better by the time they sit their GCSEs, their grades suffer across the board. With this in mind, our school places a high value on developing outstanding reading skills, which in turn open doors to success in all subjects.
Our approach to literacy is rooted in a standard of excellence that defines everything we do as a school, inspiring pupils to exceptional exam results year-on-year.
We take a fine-tuned, pupil-focused approach to developing fluency and accuracy in reading, as well as the higher-order reading skills pupils need as they progress. Our methods and approach are highly inclusive, ensuring every pupil reaches their full potential, regardless of their starting ability.
Several factors have led to our pupils’ reading success. Key among them has been our Accelerated Reader programme, which assesses and tracks pupils’ reading comprehension, promoting personalised learning and motivating pupils to read more. Some of our Year 7 and 8 pupils reached more than seven million words read over the academic year; the equivalent to over 80 novels of 300-pages in length.
Extensive internal testing demonstrates that our pupils’ reading skills surpass their age. In those instances where pupils started behind the national average, the same data shows that they successfully closed the gap at a far quicker rate than expected.
These statistics demonstrate not only that our reading strategy is working, but that it is working across all levels of ability.
