Adventure and Achievement: The DofE Award Celebration Evening Returns at Rydal Penrhos
May 12, 2025

A much-anticipated event celebrating character, challenge and pupil accomplishment returns to Rydal Penrhos this week.

At Rydal Penrhos, we believe that education should extend well beyond the academic. Our pupils benefit from an extensive programme of school trips, clubs and extra-curricular activities, with over 70 options available across the week as part of our vibrant 15:30 clubs and activities provision.

Among these, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) remains one of the most respected and transformative experiences on offer.

The DofE is a nationally recognised programme that encourages young people to build skills for life and work, broaden their horizons, and give back to their communities. At Rydal Penrhos, pupils pursue Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards through a rich blend of volunteering, physical activity, skill development and expedition. Each level deepens their growth in confidence, perseverance and social responsibility.

Participation in the DofE helps pupils stand out in university and career applications, showcasing leadership, initiative and a genuine commitment to personal development. For our pupils, it is far more than a tick-box activity; it is a journey of discovery and resilience. Whether navigating Eryri in testing conditions, volunteering with local charities or mastering new talents, every element contributes to their character and cultivates a strong sense of community and self.

Following its successful debut last year, the DofE Celebration Evening returns on Wednesday 14 May at 18:00 in the Ferguson Centre. This showcase event, lasting 30–45 minutes, offers pupils, parents and staff a chance to reflect on a year of remarkable achievements. In addition to a presentation from our Award Manager, Dr Lewis, attendees will have the opportunity to hear pupil testimonies, see photographs and videos from expedition, and inspect some of the equipment used out on expedition. Last but not least, the formal awarding of Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates will see pupils recognised for their hard work and perseverance.

The evening should serve as an inspiring introduction for the next generation; pupils moving up into and through the Senior School, who are nearing the age to begin their DofE journey. It offers a glimpse of what is possible through commitment, curiosity and courage.

With consistently high participation, the DofE remains a cornerstone of Rydal Penrhos’ enrichment programme — an embodiment of our values and our mission to nurture tomorrow’s leaders.
