A Sixth Former at Rydal Penrhos took time out of his online learning to achieve success in a global science competition.

Kevin Farrell, a Year 12 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, took the opportunity to compete in the Intermediate Biology Olympiad, and in the week leading up to the June 9 event, he completed a significant amount of extra work to ready himself for the challenge.

This came with an impressive result, with Kevin securing a score of 37 which saw him take home a Bronze Award for his efforts.

Biology teacher Anne Margerison, said: “Kevin was invigilated remotely via the Microsoft Teams app and should be congratulated for his efforts in completing the extra revision and successfully recalling subject knowledge from the previous two years.”

The Intermediate Biology Olympiad tests students’ knowledge and encourages them to continue studying the biosciences beyond school.

The competition was open to those in the first year of post-16 education, and it consisted of a one-hour multiple-choice paper online.

Questions were set on topics students are likely to have covered at GCSE and in their first year of A level.

This is the latest in a series of notable achievement from Kevin, who has earned national sailing squad selections during his time at Rydal Penrhos, has won national hockey titles, appeared on stage in Les Miserables and has accumulated a wealth of academic recognition at various events and competitions.
