Our thriving extra-curricular programme provides a wide range of opportunities to help foster a variety of talents and interests, enabling all children to develop their own personalities with opportunities to excel.

We strive to develop the whole child in and out of the classroom and while this takes place daily, children can participate in some enrichment activities relating to their interests and to learn new skills.

Whether it be on the sports field, on the water, on the stage or at a concert, out children build communication skills, the ability to work individually or within a group, confidence and self-esteem that further enhances their overall school experience.

Throughout the year Rydal Penrhos Prep School hosts a number of fundraising days for a variety of local, regional, national and global causes.

Whether it be pupils, staff or parents, everyone puts in an enormous amount of work to ensure that these charity days go off without a hitch, while also raising a significant amount of money in the process.

The school is proud to get behind fundraising events such as BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief, in addition to supporting Rydal Penrhos’ ongoing charity work in Uganda.

Parents also play a significant role in our fundraising efforts, which is most evident at our annual Secrets Room event over the festive period, where they turn into Elves all in the name of raising vital funds.

Other charities that Rydal Penrhos Prep School has supported in the last year include Diabetes UK, Sport Relief, Conwy Food Bank, Action for Children and All We Can.

Outside of the classroom, the music department runs a wealth of activities to enrich and enhance the curriculum, and to create cultural and artistic opportunities that allow all pupils, regardless of ability, to develop an enjoyment of making and appreciating music.

We also ensure gifted and talented pupils are challenged to achieve their full potential through regular performance opportunities and additional coaching.

We have a superb peripatetic music tuition team consisting of specialist piano, guitar, violin, cello, voice, clarinet, saxophone and percussion teachers. Lessons are available weekly.

The Junior Vocal Ensemble, which is open to all, is a vibrant and enthusiastic group of children who love singing and perform every term. The Treble Makers is an auditioned vocal ensemble with a focus on singing in harmony to the highest possible standard.

They compete regularly in competitions and have enjoyed participating in the North Wales Choral Festival and Chester Music Festival.

Each term, we hold a concert comprising of items prepared in class, by co-curricular groups as mentioned above, by soloists and by small ensembles. We also hold a Young Performers evening termly to present works in progress in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

Children are regularly invited out into the community to perform, be it at local care homes at Christmas or at the Remembrance Sunday service.

Rydal Penrhos Prep School has a strong tradition in Drama. Extra-curricular clubs run throughout the term for any interested pupils from Reception through to Year 6. The days and times of these vary from term to term but usually last for an hour a week. It is the policy of Rydal Penrhos Prep School to ensure that every single child in the school appears on stage at least once during an academic year.

We hold three productions a year; The Pre-Prep Nativity in December, a full musical production for pupils from Year 4 in March and a similar show for Year 6 in June.

We also run Speech and Drama classes for our older pupils which teaches them projection, diction and dramatic poise and we have in the past entered children into competitions and festivals around the North West area.

Ballet is taught as an extra-curricular activity in the Wedgwood Room to pupils in the Pre-Prep department. Classes take place every Monday and Wednesday lunchtime and are hugely popular in the Pre-Prep department.

This is a cultural art club looking at inspiration about art and culture of different societies across the world.

It could be Aboriginal, Indian, Greek, Portuguese etc, that inspires us.

We will be creating artefacts, listening to music and reading stories too.
