Rydal Penrhos pupils have once again demonstrated their sharp maths skills with an impressive set of results in the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge 2023.
Our school has a proud record of academic achievement, as evidenced by exceptional GCSE and A-Level results in recent years, which have been consistently above the national average. This success can be attributed to the school’s excellent teaching and supportive environment, which helps pupils to achieve their full potential and ‘add value’ to their education.
However, examinations are not the only way to measure the academic improvement of our children and young people. Teachers keenly monitor day-to-day progress in the classroom, while participation in national competitions can also provide a useful barometer to gauge pupils’ performance against both their peers and the country at large.
The latest such competition was the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge; a national event for school children in Year 8 or below that aims to encourage problem-solving skills and logical thinking. The Challenge took place on Wednesday 26 April 2023, and saw 42 Rydal Penrhos pupils tackle a range of difficult and thought-provoking maths questions.
We would like to congratulate our pupils on a brilliant set of results. Rydal Penrhos pupils returned 10 Bronze Awards and 11 Silver Awards, alongside 2 Gold Awards, the highest level of accolade.
Individually, several pupils excelled. Year 8 pupil Matthew Przybylko achieved the Gold Award and coveted ‘Best in School’ title, narrowly bettering the score of his classmate Attilio Nguyen, who also earned the top award. Among the youngest cohort from the Senior site, Year 7 pupil Alfie Thwaytes attained a Silver Award-worthy score on the way to a ‘Best in Year’ finish.
For the first time, pupils from the Rydal Penrhos Prep were entered into the competition, with four Year 6 pupils and five Year 5 pupils putting their maths skills to the test in a challenge normally reserved for their older peers. Even more impressively, the talented group of Prep mathematicians received three Bronze Awards and two Silver Awards for their efforts. Svaksh Singam led the way with the best Prep result; an impressive feat for the Year 5 pupil.
Overall, the outstanding results of our pupils in this year’s UKMT Challenge are a testament to their hard work and dedication, as well as the excellent maths teaching throughout the school. With such excellent results for our younger pupils in this fun maths event, the school can look forward to continuing its excellent track record of exam results in this all-important core subject.
