Health & Wellbeing faculty launch 100-mile challenge
May 4, 2020

A senior school faculty at Rydal Penrhos has sourced inspiration from a national treasure for a special pupil and staff challenge.

Health and Wellbeing staff have devised the Colonel Tom Moore 100-mile Challenge, which is open to all year groups.

The challenge is to collectively complete 100 miles of exercise a week. This will be logged by teacher Sean Kitchen and the first year group to reach the target, wins!

Each pupil taking part is to record their mileage on whatever health app they choose during allocated exercise.

This will then be correlated by Mr Kitchen, and those taking part can start logging their activity today (Monday, May 4).

Rydal Penrhos staff will also be taking part in the challenge, which is based on the incredible fundraising effort of Colonel Moore before his 100th birthday that managed to raise more than £30 million for the National Health Service.

Alun Brown, head of health and wellbeing, said: “As a faculty, we have been thinking of ways to keep the students active and renew our sense of community even if we cannot be together.

“To help with the challenge, every Saturday during the lockdown has now become World 5km day.

“The running app Strava is trying to get people completing 5km (3.1miles) on a Saturday either running, walking or a mixture of both and registering their exercise.

“Local schools, towns and cities have seized upon the challenge to try get as many people as possible outside on a Saturday, at any time during the day, for their permitted daily exercise.”

Daily results will be published to keep track, and anyone taking part should send their exercise information to Mr Kitchen via email at STKitchen@rydalpenrhos.com.
