Rydal Penrhos pupil Gwyn Davies has earned a place with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales after a successful audition.
We are fortunate to have a wealth of gifted musicians across every year group at Rydal Penrhos. Our pupils often choose music as part of their curriculum later in their school life and develop skills on a specific instrument from an early age under the guidance of specialist tutors or incredible teaching staff.
One of the school’s most talented performers is Gwyn Davies, a Year 12 pupil who is accomplished on a wide range of instruments ranging from the guitar, cello and piano.
Gwyn received some fantastic news recently after earning a place with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. This represents a significant accomplishment considering his age and the fact it was the pupil’s first time applying for the prestigious honour.
The National Youth Orchestra of Wales was established in 1945 with its first performance in 1946. It has the distinction of being the first national youth orchestra in the world.
As with all NYAW ensembles, the Orchestra develops a first-class training experience into performances that are full of energy and passion and works with esteemed, professional musicians to help deliver its key strategic aim of excellence.
Musicians are auditioned annually at centres across Wales with approximately 100 young musicians selected, depending on the repertoire requirements. Gwyn was fortunate to be included this year after impressing selectors.
This is the latest in a series of outstanding musical achievements for Gwyn, who attained a distinction from his Grade 8 Cello examination last year alongside his GCSE studies from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
Gwyn completed the assessment with flying colours, gaining 142 out of a possible 150 marks. He is also working hard in readiness for his Grade 8 Piano assessment administered by the same examination body.
Everyone at Rydal Penrhos would like to congratulate Gwyn on his well-deserved place with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. We remain incredibly proud of your continued success.
