Rydal Penrhos: Natwest feature on community efforts
June 9, 2020

Rydal Penrhos school’s community efforts during the coronavirus pandemic have been featured by a national bank.

After a series of initiatives organised by staff and pupils at Rydal Penrhos, Natwest Bank PLC contacted the school to find out more.

This has now been featured in a series of articles which can be found below.

Speaking about the efforts, Executive Principal John Waszek, said: “It’s our duty to provide the community with whatever they need to help them during these unprecedented times.

“From an educational point of view, it’s about leading by example. We’re displaying, in everything we do, that we see ourselves as part of society, that we’re all interlinked.

“We’ve seen a huge upskilling of staff and also of youngsters. We’re beginning to see all sorts of potential in things we’re doing remotely that we’ll bring into the classroom when pupils return to school.”

“Education in schools is about more than maths and English – it’s about character. The thing I’m most proud of is that we’re inculcating in our youngsters a sense of being honourable, of doing the right thing”

Things such as Rydal Penrhos’ keyworker childcare provision and boarding accommodation have been opened to the wider community, and the PPE project has produced thousands of protective masks for those leading the fight against Covid-19.

Lucy Davies, Head of Rydal Penrhos Prep School, added: “School-community links have been changed forever by this crisis. Local people know we’re here and that we want to help.

“The school is being seen as part of the community more. I see that continuing, with more use of our facilities and buildings.

“One of the big things that will come out of this is a bigger supportive community surrounding the school.”
