Y6 lend support to RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch
January 30, 2020

A Preparatory School year group used their latest outdoor learning session to lend their support to a nationwide nature initiative.

The Year 6 group at Rydal Penrhos pupils participated in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch, which is being run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, during a special Forest School activity.

During the event, each pupil worked within a group to complete bird-related activities including making bird boxes, in addition to viewing and identifying birds in the area.

There were plenty of birds to discover throughout the one-hour event, with everything from Robins to Blackbirds documented on tailor-made statistics sheets.

Results of their findings will now be sent by event organiser and Forest School leader Jude Pyves to the RSPB to be correlated with others from across the country, which helps the charity draw a picture of the health of our bird populations.

Assistant head Catherine Hughes, said: “This was a very worthwhile session for our Year 6, who managed to document a fantastic amount of different birds throughout the session.

“The RSPB do a fantastic job in not only conserving our birds, but also finding fun and interesting ways for children to become more knowledgeable and interested in nature.

“Events like this are important for their future studies and our pupils had a great time aiding with the scheme.”
