Rydal Penrhos is delighted to celebrate the recent sporting accomplishments of pupils Toby Evans, Ella Payne, and Toby Simmons, each of whom have excelled in their individual fields.

At Rydal Penrhos, we do all that we can to support our pupils’ individual sporting and athletic pursuits. While participation in team sports and weekend fixtures forms a core part of the experience of being a pupil here, we equally encourage pupils to follow their own sporting interests and immerse themselves in those interests as fully as possible.

By consequence, Rydal Penrhos has produced several outstanding sportspeople over recent years, who have added to the rich sporting legacy of yesteryear, built by legends such as Wilfred Wooler and Bleddyn Williams. Throughout the academic year, our pupils provide us with plenty of opportunities to celebrate their sporting achievements. In this light, we are delighted to share three brilliant sporting good news stories from recent weeks:

Toby Finishes 4th in Europe and the World at Karate Championships in Romania

Toby Simmons, a Year 9 pupil, recently travelled to Romania to represent Wales in the Karate World Championships and European Championships. The adept karateka and member of Mrs Clarke-McLean’s form group was one of only nine individuals chosen to represent his country in the pair of prestigious international tournaments, which were held side-by-side.

At the event, which featured some of the most talented competitors from around the world, Toby achieved the impressive feat of finishing fourth in Europe and the world. “It was a pleasure to be there,” said Toby, “and it was an honour to be able to represent Wales.”

Toby has made his school and country very proud. His achievements are a result of hundreds of hours of hard work and dedication to his craft; that kind of attitude is a true example to his peers.

Ella Selected for North Wales U13 Hockey Side

Year 7 pupil Ella Payne has been in fine sporting form recently, producing some standout performances at our recent Sports Day on the way to The Michael S James Victrix Ludorum Cup and The McKinnon Salver for Best Girl 100m Time. Ella secured the latter with a stunning time of 14.72 seconds in the 100m sprint.

Away from athletics, Ella is also a prodigious hockey player; a fact that has recently been recognised by her local region. Across three sessions, Ella competed against over seventy of the best U13 girls from hockey clubs across North Wales for the eighteen places available in the North Wales squad.

Brilliantly, Ella managed to secure one of these elusive places. This is even more impressive considering that Ella is one of the youngest in this year’s squad, at just eleven years of age. She follows in her sister Charlotte’s footsteps, who has represented the team twice.

Ella and the North Wales U13s team will now go on to compete at a three-day national tournament in Nottingham in July.

Toby Thrives on the Tennis Court During County Cup

Toby Evans, a Year 5 Prep pupil, enjoyed a super weekend away at the County Cup in Widnes.

Demonstrating once again his talent and enthusiasm for the game of tennis, Toby played his socks off, winning two of his three singles matches, overcoming his opponents from Derbyshire and Lancashire.

Despite the fact the North Wales team fell short, the budding sportsperson and member of Mrs Chamberlain’s class made his family, team, and region proud.

Toby’s performances are a testament to his skill, determination, and good spirit. They also evidence the excellent tennis pathways available to our pupils.
