The Memorial Hall

The Memorial Hall, designed by Sidney Colwyn Foulkes and completed in 1957, commemorates the 99 Old Rydalians who fell in the two World Wars.

Situated at the southern end of the Costain Building, it harmonises with its surroundings through its sandstone exterior, hipped slate roof, and elegant architectural detailing, including mullioned and transomed windows and pinnacle buttresses.

Today, the Memorial Hall remains a central part of school life, hosting a wide range of events and activities. Morning assemblies, inter-house competitions, concerts, drama productions, and prize-giving ceremonies are held in this impressive space.

The hall has also been modernised with advanced audiovisual technology, including a high-powered projector, television screens, and versatile stage lighting, making it an ideal venue for guest speakers and performances.

A particularly significant occasion is the annual Remembrance Service, during which the school community gathers in the hall to honour the fallen. The service underscores the building’s commemorative purpose, reflecting on its enduring legacy.

The Memorial Hall continues to stand as a symbol of remembrance and community. Its blend of historical elegance and modern functionality ensures its relevance for generations of Rydal Penrhos pupils to come.
