Old House

Old House is one of Rydal Penrhos’ most historically significant buildings, with a legacy stretching back to 1885.

Originally acquired by T.G. Osborn from the Rev’d F.W. Payne, it was established as a Methodist boarding school, marking the opening of Rydal Mount School on 19 September of that year—Osborn’s 42nd birthday.

Over time, the building underwent significant expansion, including the addition of the western wing, now home to the Watkinson Library. This wing once served as the Sixth Form Centre until the opening of the Ferguson Centre in the mid-2000s. Initially a boarding house, Old House evolved into a key academic building, housing the senior maths, English, and humanities departments.

The building’s role as a hub of the school’s administration is also notable. The Hovey Room, previously the Headmaster’s Study, overlooks the driveway that connects Old House to Hunt House. Here, Rydal Penrhos Heads presided over the school for many generations.

In 2024, Old House underwent a once-in-a-generation refurbishment, transforming into the new Prep and Pre-School. The original front door, once the main entrance to the building, is now the primary entrance for the Prep pupils, where they arrive and depart each day, continuing the building’s legacy of nurturing education.

Old House stands as a testament to the rich history and ongoing evolution of Rydal Penrhos, blending tradition with modern innovation.
