Performing Arts enthusiasts at Rydal Penrhos will get the opportunity to learn from a leading theatre artistic director later this term.
Rydal Penrhos has thrilled audiences in recent years with Dramatic Society plays and musicals that have enhanced the school’s incredible Performing Arts provision. This remains a core component behind the outstanding all-around education provided from Pre-School to Sixth Form.
The school’s rich and proud history of performing arts success on stage and at events such as the Chester Festival continues to bring a wealth of accomplishments. These productions are always hugely anticipated dates on the calendar, with the likes of Annie the Musical, Les Miserables and Matilda the Musical Jr. among the notable highlights in recent years.
Aspiring performing artists will be given a treat later this term thanks to a specially-arranged evening with Iwan Lewis, a well-respected actor who holds the position of Artistic Director of The Barn Theatre.
This will take place on Thursday 9 March from 5-7pm in the Memorial Hall. Iwan will be giving some informative insight into his experiences of drama in school in addition to his acting and current career at The Barn.
Iwan graduated from the Guildford School of Acting in 2010, where he received a prestigious award from the Elizabeth Evans Trust. He is known for the roles of Emmett in the UK tour of Legally Blonde and Bahorel in the film version of Les Miserables.
The gifted performer also appeared in the 2010 London Revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Passion as well as Oarsman in the Park Theatre transfer of Therese Raquin in 2014.
Iwan’s been Artistic Director of the Barn Theatre since 2017 and the establishment has gone from strength to strength under his leadership. Their first production, a folk rework of The Secret Garden musical in March 2018, received 4 stars from The Stage, who called it “A delight for all ages”.
The theatre won Stage magazine ‘Fringe Theatre of the Year 2019’ and was commended throughout the COVID-19 lockdown for innovative ideas.
Iwan is no stranger to Rydal Penrhos, visiting frequently to assist pupils in their performance development. This included overseeing the dress rehearsal of Under Milk Wood (The Definitive Edition) and speaking with pupils in its immediate aftermath.
