Rydal Penrhos: 6th Form Charity Challenges for care homes
June 23, 2020

Rydal Penrhos school’s Sixth Form Charity Committee have organised a series of events throughout the half term to raise money for two local care homes.

The group, who are led by Morgan Kendall and Lara Pyves, Year 12 pupils at Rydal Penrhos, are encouraging members of the school community to take part in three separate activities in the coming weeks.

All proceeds raised will go towards Merton Place in Colwyn Bay and Coed Craig, which is situated in Rhos on Sea.

Morgan, said: “Both care homes have been closed to relatives and visitors since the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, and this has inevitably caused issues surrounding the safety and wellbeing of residents and carers.

“Neither home currently has the funding to provide additional aspects of care for residents in this difficult period.”

The Committee will be running a Virtual Talent Show, which involves submitting a video showcasing a particular skill no more than two minutes long.

Entries close on July 3 at 4pm and can include music, art, drama, acting, animation or “anything in between”.

Director of Music Pete Williams, Head of Art Mark Sherrington and English & Drama teacher Fiona Earle will be judging the submissions.

The winners will be sent a gift card and could potentially be posted onto Rydal Penrhos’ social media channels.

A Virtual Quiz is also scheduled to take place on June 26 during form period. This will see everyone come together in pursuit of winning the prize for their respective form group.

The final event will be a Sponsored Sports Challenge, which will be taking place over the next few weeks, the last of the academic year.

This can involve any sport of the participant’s choosing and they must seek sponsors for their efforts.

With the money raised, Merton Place would like to buy an awning or sail that could cover an outdoor space in which, by appointment and once lockdown eases, relatives could visit.

Coed Craig would like to improve their garden facilities, as they can no longer take their residents on outings. They currently have limited garden furniture and would also like to purchase bird feeders, hanging baskets, tubs, planters and flowers to improve their outdoor space.
