Charley’s journey from starlet to U.S college place
January 30, 2023

Charley Simpson’s rise from aspiring golfer to one of the best young prospects in the country since joining Rydal Penrhos has been incredible.

It didn’t take long for Charley Simpson’s golfing prowess to shine upon joining Rydal Penrhos in Year 7. The determined pupil’s ongoing commitment to improving his craft alongside academic commitments is a testament to how hard he’s worked to make dreams become reality at an important stage of development.

Charley’s time at the school is littered with accomplishments. This all started by making a name for himself on the regional scene before progressing rapidly to the national stage.

The Year 13 pupil held both the Welsh Open U14 and U16 titles during a glittering young career to date. This also included selection to the Wales Golf player performance pathway en route to national squad honours at U16 and U18 levels.

Charley also attained plenty of high finishes representing Rydal Penrhos across the country. He achieved a high individual ranking from the Independent Schools Golf Association and also helped the school team reach a prestigious national final for good measure.

This year has been an important one for Charley, who set his sights on attaining a golf scholarship to continue his journey in the United States of America when his time as a Sixth Former comes to a conclusion.

Thanks to his accolades and academic determination, Charley has secured a scholarship at the University of Idaho, joining the Vandals golf team. This will commence in 2024 and is a just reward for the pupil’s hard work.

Charley will be joining a strong golf team of nine players, including a couple of UK-based college athletes whose advice and experience will be invaluable to smooth his transition across the pond.

Rachel Simpson, who is Charley’s mother, was highly complementary of the school’s role in Charley’s progress, saying: “Rydal Penrhos has been a large part of Charley’s journey, contributing to the young man he has become. We are very grateful for all the support, opportunities, learning and encouragement he has had from the school. We are so proud of him.”

It’s been an unbelievable journey to Charley’s eventual destination in the United States. We cannot wait to see what comes next!
