Rydal Penrhos pupil Freddie MacLaverty received another notable sailing honour with selection to the Welsh national ICLA squad.
Freddie MacLaverty is emerging as one of the best young sailors in the country. The Rydal Penrhos pupil has built up a tremendous reputation on the sailing circuit, developing his skills significantly within the school’s provision and in his own time at events across the country.
This is something that’s brought Freddie some notable accomplishments in recent years. He was the only Welsh member of the Team GB squad that competed at the ILCA Youth World Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal and the pupil also secured a well-deserved ILCA 6 Welsh title during the RYA Cymru Wales Welsh Youth and Junior Championships.
Freddie was recently selected as a finalist at the Conwy Sports Awards in the Junior Sportsman of the Year category. There was further cause for celebration as the pupil earned selection to the RYA Cymru Wales Welsh National ILCA Squad for the 2022/23 campaign.
Selection for the squad is a recognition of Freddie’s potential to progress within Welsh and British youth sailing, with the aim of progressing to UK youth squads. The call-up comes following strong competition performances and his exceptional commitment to training.
As Freddie progresses through the performance pathway, the expectations and necessary commitment required to achieve desired performance objectives increase significantly. Training weekends are generally intense and involve a range of activities including time on the water, fitness work and classroom-based theory sessions alongside specialist support staff and coaches.
Sarah McGovern, who is Performance Manager (Wales) for the Royal Yachting Association, said: “As an organisation, we value the contribution of Rydal Penrhos in Freddie‘s continued development as an individual and a talented athlete.
“Indeed, sailing promotes a range of transferable skills related but not limited to communication, organisation, leadership and planning.”
Everyone at Rydal Penrhos congratulates Freddie on another outstanding accomplishment. One that the school hopes will further enhance his blossoming sailing career.
