Two Rydal Penrhos staff members have lent their support to a regional hospital where a family member is currently working during the coronavirus pandemic.

Phil and Karen Mather, the long-serving housemaster and matron of Hathaway Boarding House at Rydal Penrhos, put together a care package for NHS Staff at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Their daughter Beth, who is also a former pupil, is currently working at the facility’s ICU and BDU units, and given the strain staff are currently under, it leaves little time for breaks.

Mr and Mrs Mather asked for collections regarding items such as snacks, biscuits, coffee for staff to get a quick energy boost during what they little time they have away from their work commitments.

A large number of shower gels, soaps, moisturisers and deodorants were also collected due to a significant number of hospital staff living and showering on-site during this unprecedented time.

The care package drive received a tremendous amount of support and it was delivered to the hospital earlier this month. This is the latest way members of the Rydal Penrhos family have aided the community during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Many former pupils are lending their expertise to hospitals around the continent such as Eli Wyatt and Isabel Demel, with medical student Shaswath Ganapathi setting up a support group to provide assistance to NHS staff during this troubled time.

Rydal Penrhos opened its boarding accommodation to critical keyworkers who were unable to go home during the pandemic, and their childcare provision was also opened to the wider community.

The current PPE production project started by Mark Harmsworth, James Bonser and Sixth Form pupil Jamie Lavery is now well over the 2,000-mark, and the likes of Chay Bonnington, Llion and Sophie Morris and Emily and Harry Nurse have also been making PPE during their online learning breaks.
