Sailing: Rydal Penrhos Pupils Qualify for Welsh RS Tera Development Squad
November 3, 2023

Rydal Penrhos is happy to report further sailing success, with our pupils called-up to the Welsh RS Tera Development Squad.

At Rydal Penrhos, we take immense pride in our rich history of sporting excellence, and sailing is a key part of this. Nestled just a five-minute walk away from the picturesque Rhos-on-Sea coastline and the glistening Irish Sea, our school’s location has naturally nurtured several incredibly talented sailors over the years.

Today, we are thrilled to share the latest success stories from three outstanding young sailors. Evie Bennell, Harry Bennell and Harrison Hogan have all qualified for the Welsh RS Tera Development Squad. This is a prestigious honour that will provide a platform for all three to continue their success on the water into the future.

Harrison has for some time been finding success for himself in the sailing world. He has not only actively participated in all Rydal Penrhos sailing opportunities but has also pursued his love for the sport outside of school. This has given rise to a range of competitive successes, including a remarkable victory at the Conwy Fife One Design ‘A’ Series Race 3 at the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club. Two years ago, he and his father, Mark, in Boat No. 18, made a thrilling move in the closing stages to cross the finishing line in first position.

Remarkable brother-sister duo, Harry and Evie Bennell, have also been sailing for many years, and under the guidance of their father, Gordon Bennell, they have developed into strong sailors. Previously members of Shotwick Sailing Club for some time, the pair joined Port Dinorwic Sailing Club earlier this year. This step allowed them to sail on larger waters and connect with more young people who share the same class of boat.

In September, Evie and Harry participated in the prestigious Welsh Youth & Junior Championships in Pwllheli. More recently, the dynamic duo competed at the end of season event in Draycote, where they joined around 85 sailors for a thrilling weekend of racing.

Congratulations to Harrison, Evie, and Harry for their tremendous efforts and accomplishments in the world of sailing. We eagerly look forward to hearing about more sailing successes not just from this exceptional trio, but from all our talented and committed pupils – especially when we take residence at our new facility at Porth Eirias!
