Skiing: Rydal Penrhos Team Conquer the Slopes at 2024 Welsh Ski Championships
October 14, 2024

Over an unforgettable weekend of sporting competition, Rydal Penrhos pupils excelled at the Welsh National Ski Championships, claiming a host of national titles and podium finishes.

A Rydal Penrhos education has always been about more than the learning that goes on inside the classroom; it is about the wealth of opportunities and experiences that our children and young people enjoy.

Skiing has long been a cornerstone of this philosophy at Rydal Penrhos. Our pupils regularly hone their slalom skills at the nearby Llandudno Snowsports Centre, preparing them for competition and enjoyment alike. Beyond this, the school has organised international ski trips that offer a broader cultural and sporting experience, such as the upcoming visit to Sestriere in February 2025, the site of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

This wealth of experience and passion for skiing culminated in an extraordinary set of results at the Welsh National Ski Championships in Llangrannog. The event was not just about the competition; pupils enjoyed a fun-filled residential weekend that included time at the local beach, fostering camaraderie and team spirit. But it was the slopes where Rydal Penrhos truly shone, securing an impressive array of individual and team accolades.

Among the Prep pupils, Rydal Penrhos secured a clean sweep of the U12 Boys podium, with Jack Brookes-Fazakerley securing 1st place, closely followed by Henry Savage and William Oliver in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Our U10 Boys also claimed the top honours in their category, with Casey Lord-Langton skiing to victory, while James Richards finished an excellent 2nd place. In the U12 Girls category, Camilla Simmons raced to a well-deserved 1st place finish, while Evangeline Ratcliffe earned top spot in the U10 category.

The Prep team results offer a particular point of pride for the school. The Rydal Penrhos A team (consisting of Henry, Jack, Wilfred and William) clinched 1st place, while the B team (Casey, James, Evangeline, and Camilla) secured a fantastic 2nd place, demonstrating the depth of talent within our school.

In the Senior events, Connie Ratcliffe led the way in the U14 Girls (Unregistered) category, achieving 1st place overall, with Beatrice Brookes-Fazakerley close behind in 2nd. In the U14 Boys (Unregistered), Harrison Simmons delivered a strong performance, finishing 2nd, while Ethan Pollard took 2nd place in the U14 Boys (Registered) category. The Rydal Penrhos Mixed Team (Beatrice, Connie, Ethan, and Harrison) performed brilliantly to secure 2nd place in the overall standings.

This remarkable weekend of success is the latest milestone for our ski programme, which continues to go from strength-to-strength. Congratulations go to every pupil and member of staff involved. You have truly lived our ethos of ‘Do All the Good You Can,’ and we certainly could not be prouder!
