Rights Respecting School: Rydal Penrhos on Award Pathway
October 8, 2024

Rydal Penrhos School is proud to announce that it has begun its journey towards achieving the Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA), led by UNICEF UK.

This marks an exciting new chapter for our school, as we work to embed the values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into the fabric of everyday school life.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award places children’s rights at the heart of a school’s ethos, fostering a safe, inclusive environment where every pupil feels valued and respected. Given Rydal Penrhos has long been committed to ensuring children feel safe and empowered as individuals, the award aligns perfectly our core vision and ethos.

By integrating the principles of the UNCRC, we aim to further strengthen our culture of mutual respect, inclusivity, and global citizenship. This approach will help pupils understand not only their rights but also their responsibilities as members of a global community.

We have already begun embedding the values of the UNCRC into our curriculum and daily routines. For example, Prep parents and carers may have noticed that children’s rights are now a regular theme in our Celebration Assemblies.

As we begin this new initiative, we know that working closely with parents, carers, teachers, and staff will be key to promoting children’s rights throughout the school. Throughout the accreditation process, Rydal Penrhos will also be working closely with UNICEF UK, who support over 5,000 schools on their path to becoming Rights Respecting Schools.

The journey to achieving this status is a long-term commitment, with the Bronze Award, or ‘Rights Committed’ stage, typically taking around six months to achieve, and the Gold Award (full ‘Rights Respecting’ status) taking three to four years.

This exciting project reflects our dedication to continuous improvement; something that is visibly apparent from the developments seen across school over the past twelve months. From the opening of a brand-new Prep and Pre-School to the creation of new Senior classrooms and a fully-refitted Food Lab, we remain committed to significant and ongoing investment in school buildings and equipment.

We look forward to keeping parents and carers updated as we make progress towards achieving Rights Respecting School status.
