Rydal Penrhos School pupils delivered another theatrical masterpiece in a landmark whole-school endeavour for the two-to-eighteen independent school.
A spectacular production of Oliver! captivated audiences in the Memorial Hall across a three-night run from 18 to 20 February 2025. This adaptation of Lionel Bart’s beloved musical – based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist – was a true tour de force, showcasing the remarkable talents of pupils across all year groups.
Under the expert direction of Mrs Northwood and with the musical lead of Mr McGuinness, the production was an unforgettable experience. Notably, this was the first whole-school production to feature Year 5 and 6 pupils, who brought enthusiasm and charm to their roles as paupers, demonstrating the benefits of Rydal Penrhos’ new one-school model.
At the heart of the production were Wren Awelan and Reuben Tough, who delivered showstopping performances in the titular role of Oliver, commanding the stage with confidence and maturity well beyond their years. Toby Simmons and Safa Maqsood gave accomplished performances as Mr Bumble and Widow Corney, while Ed Beamish and Amelia Williams shone as the Sowerberrys, bringing both humour and depth to their portrayals.
The ever-iconic Artful Dodger was brought to life with flair by Priya Harshey-Jones, whose energy and charisma lit up the stage. Meanwhile, Finlay Perry, already known for his outstanding talent following his lead role in Henry the Tudor Dude, stole the show as Fagin, captivating audiences with his commanding presence and vocal prowess.
India Livingstone and Tillie Bennet delivered powerful performances as Nancy and Bet, while Jonah Craddock and Noah Lewis lent their expertise to the roles of Mr Brownlow and the menacing Bill Sykes, respectively.
A special mention must go to the dedicated crew and band, whose professionalism added to what was a highly sophisticated and polished production.
Rydal Penrhos’ latest Oliver! production was a shining example of the ethos and spirit that defines Rydal Penrhos School. It was a resounding success, leaving audiences thrilled and pupils inspired for future theatrical endeavours.
