“Rydal Penrhos is an exceptional school and had record results for its learners this year, so my visit was also an opportunity to congratulate Executive Principal John Waszek and his staff on their fantastic achievements.”
A leading political figure in North Wales has praised Rydal Penrhos for its high educational standards and exceptional examination results.
The Year 12 group at Rydal Penrhos were given the opportunity to hold a discussion with Darren Millar, who is the Welsh Assembly Member for Clwyd West and is also the Vice-Chair of the Welsh Conservative Party Board.
Another reason for Mr Millar’s visit was to congratulate Executive Principal John Waszek and the school’s dedicated staff team on some incredible A Level and GCSE results this summer, which were the best in history.
The Upper Sixth Form managed to attain a 51.9 per cent pass rate at A*-A, which is the highest in the school’s history since the introduction of the A* grade and represents an increase of 30.5 per cent year on year, with 75.9% achieving A*-B grades.
Those awarded A*-C grades now stand at 90.5 per cent, which is another record and a significant rise of 30.1% from the previous year’s results.
Rydal Penrhos’ pass rate (A*-E) rose to 100 per cent for the sixth time since 2000. And the mean number of subjects passed per candidate was 3.1.
The number of A* grades awarded was 49.2 per cent, which is a significant rise of 33.2% from the previous year.
A total of 66.7 per cent of grades were A*-A – a rise of 30.6% – and this is testament to how each member of Year 11 applied themselves to their studies.
The number of pupils securing A*-B grades was 87.1 per cent, which is an increase of 17.4% from the 2018/19 academic year.
98.5 per cent of Rydal Penrhos’ GCSE candidates attained A*-C marks, with 97.8 per cent securing this feat in five or more subjects. The mean number of passes per candidate was recorded at 9.1.
The number of pupils achieving A*-A or 9-7 grades at GCSE was 62.1 per cent, which is significantly higher than the national averages of Wales (25.9%) and England (27.5%).
There was further cause for celebration from a Rydal Penrhos perspective as the number of A*-C and 9-4 grades awarded was 98.4 per cent. This was once again higher than the national averages in Wales and England, which were 74.5% and 78.8% respectively.
Mr Millar, said: “It’s always great to visit Rydal Penrhos. I had a great time with the young people there who really gave me a grilling with their varied and interesting question. Some are clearly budding politicians.
“Rydal Penrhos is an exceptional school and had record results for its learners this year, so my visit was also an opportunity to congratulate Executive Principal John Waszek and his staff on their fantastic achievements.
“I wish all the students continued success with their studies, particularly in these challenging times, and hopefully I will see some of them in the Senedd at some point in the future!”
